Commission for an artwork inspired by the Time Series Graphs by William Playfair for the Cabinet Office, London 2021

Presentation of two 40 x 30 cm studies in paint on board, two paintings inspired by the Time Series Graphs by William Playfair. I chose to work on board a surface that can withstand layering of paint and line without deteriorating. This has allowed for the fine graph lines to be represented and also the multi coloured painted geometric shapes to be overlayed. The composition represents the extreme complexity and subtle nuance of data that can be interpreted using a graph. I have attempted to visualise both analogue and digital data forms.

When researching historical precedents in art for this style of work I looked at artists from the German Bauhaus school one of the most influential movements in modern design. Specifically the paintings of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee who made abstractions expressing information, geometry and movement using a design aesthetic that was inspired by everyday function and form.
